We’ve been quieter than usual – here’s why

Shit happened.

We’ve been very quiet since Season 4 wrapped up in August. Like, super quiet.

There’s a perfectly explainable reason why for that.

Around the time Season 4 was coming to an end, I was in the hardest grasp of undiagnosed depression and anxiety. This was around end of July through to mid-September. I didn’t use the terms ‘depression’ or ‘anxiety’ as it didn’t feel right to use them at the time until I was officially diagnosed. There’s a lot more to write on this, but I already did that on my personal site. You can read all about it here.

But in relation to My Favourite Game, it had a direct effect on output. Towards the end of Season 4, I had to literally will myself to write posts here, sort out the social media stuff and upload the show by myself that I would put off as long as possible. Easy enough, right? Not so much when you have depression. It feels like you have two ten-ton stone weighed down to your ankles. It’s hard to quantify, but after Season 4 ended, I had no willpower left to do anymore episodes. I just didn’t have it in me anymore.

Thankfully, I’ve since seen my doctor, I’ve been on antidepressants for the past six weeks as of writing this and I’m in a better place for it. I’m starting to find my mojo again and doing things that I had no passion in doing this past summer like playing games, writing and other stuff. And yes, that includes doing My Favourite Game again.

As for how it affected plans for the show after Season 4? Back in March, I said Season 5 would be coming early next year rather than the end of this year, but would try to put out a few episodes for the end of the year. What that was planned to be was actually a mini-season of episodes – roughly around six episodes, specifically – that’d be out every two weeks starting in early October to celebrate My Favourite Game’s second birthday (we missed its birthday!) and end in early December with the 50th episode of My Favourite Game. A sort of My Favourite Game – Season 4.5. But because my depression was that bad at one stage by mid-September, I’d missed the deadline to get that ball rolling. So that’s no longer happening.

So we’re going to jump straight into Season 5 now instead. It’s still very early to go into details, but the hope is it’ll be out early next year. I’m making lists, checking them twice (ITS. NOT. CHRISTMAS. YET. STOP IT) and then once those are done, we’ll get cracking hopefully. Matter of fact, I’ve already confirmed one guest for next season. Now to sort out the other nine!

That said, I don’t want to leave you too empty-handed. I’m not putting this down as a promise or a guarantee, just in case. But I am looking at the very least to do one episode for the end of the year to tide you over before the end of the year. There may even be a second. We’ll see how that pans out.

But for now, I just want to say I am sorry for the radio silence. I’ve not done the best job in detailing what’s been going on with the show since Season 4 ended. And that’s on me. I’m going to try and be a lot better with that and hopefully this is a start. But there will still be a Season 5 for sure and there may even be one more episode or two before the end of 2016 to keep you going before then.

For now, stay cool and stay awesome. Thanks for reading.
